In 1927 after careers in farming to peddling papers, he moved to Hollywood, California where he opened a restaurant and began a career as a bit-part actor. It was found later that "Michael Romanoff" was indeed a fake and that his real name was Harry F. Gerguson, the son of Russian immigrants.
