Author, Journalist. He is known best for his "Uncle Remus" animal stories about 'Brer' (Brother) Rabbit', 'Brer Fox', 'Brer Bear' and 'Brer Wolf'. Born a poor and illegitimate child in Eatonton, Georgia, he was a virtual recluse who had a gift for humor and dialect. From 1862 to 1866 he worked as a printer on a plantation in Eatonton. While there, Harris became acquainted with the slaves on the plantation, learning their customs and language and listening to their stories. This material later formed the basis of his most successful writings. From 1876 to 1900 he worked as a journalist for the Atlanta "Constitution", where he would first publish his tales. Intending his work to be a serious anthology of the old slave stories, after the stories became popular, he published "Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings" (1880), "Uncle Remus and His Friends" (1892) and "Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit" (1906), all of which became very popular with the young and adults all over the world. He died peacefully at his Atlanta home, the "Wren's Nest", in 1908. In his lifetime, Joel Chandler Harris wrote 30 books.
