Cartoonist. Psychiatrist. Born in New York City to Sophie Alexandre and Peter Dallis, he was graduated from Washington and Jefferson College in 1933. He then enrolled in Temple University and was graduated from their medical school in 1938 before becoming resident in psychiatry at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, from 1941 to 1945. He opened his own practice specializing in psychiatry in Toledo, Ohio in 1945. In 1948, under the pseudonym Dal Curtis, he sold a soap opera-style comic strip strip, 'Rex Morgan, M.D.' in which the lead character counseled clients with professional advice and dealt with personal problems, it became highly successful. In 1958, he retired from his medical practice, and devoted his time to developing his comic strips, which by then also included 'Judge Parker,' which began in 1952 under the pseudonym Paul Nichols. He wrote the stories in advance of publication, and then turned them over to artists for drawing and inking. Moving to Scottsdale, Arizona, he launched a third strip in 1961, 'Apartment 3-G,' centered on three single career women sharing a Manhattan apartment. Unlike some syndicated comic strip characters, neither Judge Parker nor Rex Morgan ever had a large presence in comic books, the former only two issues, and the latter three issues in 1956. Dallis was the recipient of the Decency Award from Kiwanis International in 1973, and the Print Media Award from the National Federation of Parents for Drug Free Youth in 1985. Upon his death at age 79, the strips he created were being published in more than 400 US newspapers with an estimated readership of more than 60 million. They continue in syndication, now written by others who in 2015 gave Rex Morgan's new baby boy the middle name of Dallis.
