During the campaign she gave birth to her only child Beatrix. On the way back to Germany the army was seized by an epidemic. Gunhild died not far away from Parma. Her embalmed body was brought to Germany by Heinrich and his mother. The emperor was already too sick to accompany them. It is possible that she was buried in Limburg instead of Speyer because she had not been crowned empress.
