He built a business of 100 lumber yards, mill properties, timberland, railroad and steamship lines. Also got into coal mining, general merchandising, land agencies, and built the entire planned city of Longview, Washington. His home was at 3218 Gladstone Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri. A beautiful stone mansion with 72 rooms, today it is the Kansas City Museum. He later built 1,700 acre Longview Farm on the south side of the city, that had 40 buildings. Breeding, training, and showing horses was his daughter Loula's passion. Some of her skills were learned under the guidance of the famous horse trainer Tom Bass. A millionaire many times over, R.A. Long lost his fortune in the great depression. After the death of R.A. Long and daughter Loula, his older daughter Sally America Long Ellis, donated 146 acres of Longview Farm for the building of Longview Community College. Daughters Loula and Sally America are here in this mausoleum also.
