United States Navy Vice Admiral. A veteran of World War II, he was in command of the Essex-class aircraft carrier "USS Randolph" during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, and took active part in containing a Soviet Union submarine near Cuba. Born in Grays Point, Missouri, he attended the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia before entering the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland in 1935. He graduated Annapolis in 1939 and was assigned to the USS Saratoga. He was aboard the Saratoga during her first action of World War II. In 1942 Harty attended flight training at Pensacola Florida becoming a naval aviator; as an aviator he served as executive officer of of the VP-204 then as commanding officer of the VP-210 during the Battle of the Atlantic. Among numerous other important staff assignments after the war Harty was assigned to Staff Supreme Allied Powers Europe under Field Marshall Montgomery. He later commanded the USS Greenwich Bay, Flagship of the Middle East Force then was commanding officer of the USS Randolph. While in command of the Randolph, he was commended by the Commander in Chief of the Atlantic Fleet for operations during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Harty served 39 years in the United States Navy achieving the rank of Vice Admiral. Harty was a 3 war veteran serving in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Also during his naval career he was assistant vice chief of naval operations for NATO and was military adviser to President George Herbert Walker Bush during the period Bush was chief of the U.S. delegation at the United Nations. He began his long and exceptional naval career in 1935 not retiring until 1974.
