He began his career as a writer with the Saturday Evening Post and The New Yorker. In 1932 he moved to Hollywood where he collaborated with Billy Wilder and made 15 films including "The Lost Weekend" (1945) and "Sunset Boulevard" (1950), which both won Oscars. In 1953 he made his own film, "Titanic," the film also won an Oscar.
