Minnesota Governor. A graduate of a Litchfield Academy Maine, he taught school briefly before studying law, was admitted to the bar, then moved to St. Paul, Minnesota and practiced law. During the Sioux Rebellion in 1862, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army. After his military service, he was a judge of the Sixth Judicial District, (1865-69). In 1870, he was elected as a Republican the 6th Governor of Minnesota, serving until 1874. While office, the state board of health was established, seventeen new counties were formed, the state constitution was revised and passenger-freight rate regulations were promoted. After his term, he served as the third auditor of the U.S. Treasury, as the registrar of the U.S. Land Office in Fargo, North Dakota and was a member of the Minnesota railroad commission, (1887-91).
