Matthias Jacob Bovee
Birth: Jul. 24, 1793
Montgomery County
New York, USA
Death: Sep. 12, 1872
Waukesha County
Wisconsin, USA

US Congressman. He was born in Amsterdam, New York and attended the local school until his father died in 1807, after which he worked on his family's farm and taught school. He became a merchant in 1815 and was involved in local government, including service as Chairman of the Amsterdam Town Board and member of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors. Bovee also became active in other businesses, including railroads and the Montgomery County Bank. He served in the New York Militia in the 1820s, holding the position of Paymaster in the 121st Infantry Regiment. In 1826 he successfully contested his apparent loss of an election for the New York Assembly, was sworn in and served the remainder of the term. In 1831 he was elected an Amsterdam Village Trustee. In 1834 Bovee was the successful Jacksonian candidate for a seat in the US House of Representatives and served one term, 1835 to 1837. At the completion of his term he returned to Amsterdam and resumed his business interests. In 1843 he moved to Wisconsin, living first in Milwaukee and later in Eagle, where he resumed his participation in local government, serving as a Justice of the Peace for more than 10 years. In 1845 he was a candidate for the position of US Land Register for Wisconsin, but did not receive the appointment. Bovee became a farmer after moving to Wisconsin, remaining active until his death in Eagle. Congressman Benedict Arnold of New York was his brother in law. (bio by: Bill McKern)
