U.S. Congressman. Born in Paisley, Scotland, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, received his degree, immigrated to the United States in 1781 and settled near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. There he practiced medicine and was an associate judge for Adams County, (1801-08). In 1809, he was elected as a Republican to the Eleventh Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1817. After his term, he resumed the practiced medicine until his death at age 63 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
