U.S. Senator. He attended Furman University, then was successful was an owner-publisher of the Anderson Independent and Daily Mail of South Carolina. He also established the WAIM radio station in 1935 and was chairman of the South Carolina Planning Board, (1934-38). In 1944, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Ellison D. Smith, serving until 1944. Not a candidate for election, he was founder of the WAIM-TV television station in 1953, was publisher of Quote Magazine and resumed his newspaper publishing business until his death at age 78.
