U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1832 and opened a legal practice in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. He served as president judge of the Pennsylvania twentieth judicial district. (1851-58). In 1859, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh Congresses and as an Independent Republican to the Thirty-eighth Congress. serving until his death at age 54.
