Michigan Governor. Moving as a child to Michigan, he later established the Mayflower Tobacco Company which became one of the most successful manufacturers of tobacco in the United States. He was on the Detroit Board of Education, (1855-57), the Detroit Common Council, (1860-61) and a member of the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners, (1865-72). In 1873, he was elected as a Republican the 16th Governor of Michigan, serving until 1877. During his tenure a state fish commission was organized, the state's railroad laws were improved, a state board of health was founded, a liquor tax law was sanctioned and the state militia was restructured into the Michigan National Guard. After leaving office, he resumed his previous business interest and died from Tuberculosis at age 49.
