Gov. John Larue Helm (1802-1867) - Find a Grave Memorial

Kentucky Governor. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, in 1823 and established a successful legal career in Meade County Kentucky. He was the as the Meade County Attorney in 1824 and was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives, (1827-43). He was a member of the Kentucky State Senate, (1844-48) and was elected as a Whig the 13th Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky, serving (1848-50). When Governor John Crittenden resigned from office in 1850, Helm assumed the duties as the 18th Governor of Kentucky, serving until 1851. During his term, he advocated for election reform, but was critical of a tax-supported school system. After leaving office, he served as president of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, (1854-60) and was a member of the Kentucky State Senate, (1865-67). In 1867, he was elected as a Whig the 24th Governor of Kentucky and passed away five days after being sworn into office.
