After his term in the United States Congress expired on March 3, 1847, he was succeeded in office by United States Representative John Burton Thompson. He then served three terms as a Member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives from 1858 to 1859, 1861 to 1862, and again from 1863 to 1864.
