Israel was the son of William Harrington and Ann Hamon. He was a Revolutionary War Soldier and a pathmaster in Easton, NY. He and his wife, Rhoda Mann, settled on Harrington in Easton. They were the parents of at least five children: Charles (who died in infancy), Charles, Chad, Polly, and James.

Israel and other early members of the family are thought to be buried in the family cemetery on Harrington Hill in Easton. The early graves were marked by fieldstone markers, without inscriptions, that were placed at the head and foot of each grave.
