Helen was the youngest child of Edwin O. and Nellie Blunt Wagar. As a youngster, her health was fragile. She suffered through rheumatic fever which left her with a weakened heart. She survived the Flu epidemic of 1918, which took the life of her brother Willie. Her family moved around quite a bit when she was younger, but eventually her parents settled in Bonner, near Missoula, Montana where Edwin worked at a saw mill. Helen's family placed a high value on education. Consequently she graduated from both High School in Missoula and from the Dillon Normal School for teachers, receiving a two year degree. She taught at the Dovetail School in Petroleum County, Montana where she met her husband, Andrew, son of the family with whom she boarded. They were married at her parents' home in Bonner at a double ceremony with sister Cordelia and Frank Donnally on September 10, 1929. Helen and Andrew would eventually buy the former Hall Clement Ranch in Petroleum County, Montana in 1941. Here they raised sheep, cattle, and hay. They had five children: Louise, David, Thomas, Edwin, and John. Andrew died in 1978. Helen continued to live on her beloved Sky Hook Ranch until her home burned at Christmastime, 1988. Afterward she lived in Roundup and, when her health began to fail, she moved to Bozeman to the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Don Baldridge.
