Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in Vermont, he offered his services in 1862 to the Union Army and was commissioned as Colonel of the 28th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 15, 1862. At the December 13, Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, he led his regiment as it took part in the initial attacks on Marye's Heights, where he was shot in the jaw with a wound that was feared mortal. Carried from the field, he survived the wounds, which ended his field command. Honorably mustered out from the 28th New Jersey on July 6, 1863, he returned to active duty on September 25, 1863 when he was commissioned Colonel and commander of the 6th Veterans Reserve Corps. Through the rest of the war he served in a number of prominent administrative duties, including as Chief of the Veterans Reserve Branch of the Provost Marshal General's Bureau, and as Military Governor of the District of Columbia. On March 13, 1865 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services at the Battle of Fredericksburg". He resigned his commission on October 1, 1865, and would go on to have a successful post-war career as a civil engineer. He died at his residence on West 24th Street, New York City, New York in 1888.
