Francis Alanson Cunningham

U.S. Congressman. Born in Abbeville District, South Carolina, he moved to Eaton, Ohio, in 1826. There he taught school, studied medicine, opened a medical practice in 1829 and was clerk of the court for Preble County, in 1833. In 1845, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-ninth Congress, serving until 1847. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he studied law; was admitted to the bar and began to practice law in Eaton, Ohio. Appointed paymaster of Volunteers by President Polk in December 1847, he was commissioned paymaster officer in the Regular Army in 1849, and was retired from active service in 1863. He died at age 59 in Eaton, Ohio. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
