The tenth and youngest child of Charles and Catherine Dickens was named after his godfather, Edward Bulwer Lytton. At the age of sixteen, he went to Australia to join his brother Alfred, and never returned to England. From 1876 to 1881, he managed the Mount Murchison sheep station. On the 25th. April 1885, a remarkable case, concerning cruelty to animals, was held at the court in Wilcannia. Edward Dickens was one of the police magistrates, and a witness for the prosecution was Frederick James Anthony Trollope, the son of another famous novelist. After this, Edward Dickens became either the Mayor of Wilcannia, or a member of the New South Wales Parliament (sources differ). For the last two years of his life, he worked for the Lands Department. He married Constance Emily Desailly ; they had no children. His name, along with those of the other nine children, appears on the monument next to his mother's grave in Highgate Cemetery, North London.
