U.S. Senator. He graduated from the Texas State Normal School and taught school for several years. He then studied law, admitted to the bar in 1909, practice law in Farwell, Texas, moved to Clovis, New Mexico, in 1915 and continued to practice law. He was judge of the district court for the fifth judicial district of New Mexico, (1919-21), judge of the district court for the fifth judicial district of New Mexico, (1919-21) and associate justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court, (1923-24). In 1924, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until his resignation in 1933. He was appointed as circuit judge of the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Tenth Judicial Circuit, serving (1933-61).
