US Congressman. He moved to Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1845, where he became involved in the manufacture of black lead, stove polish and pencils. He was a member of the board of aldermen of Jersey City, (1861-62) and was Mayor of Jersey City, (1864-66). In 1869, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-first Congress, serving until 1871. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was once again Mayor of Jersey City (1886-91), plus was one of the organizers and first president of the board of trade of Jersey City.
