U.S. Congressman. Successful in mercantile pursuits, he served as a member of the Philadelphia board of school commissioners (1845-57). In 1857, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth Congress, serving until 1859. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed Pennsylvania chief commissioner of highways in 1862 and served until his death.
