Nazi Third Reich figure. She was three-years-old when her parents divorced. Her mother then married the wealthy Jewish trader Richard Friedlaender. Magda liked him very much, but when she went to the high school, her mother and Friedlaender divorced as he had great financial losses in World War I. At the age of eighteen, she met a rich, thirty-years-old man named Gunther Quandt. Gunther was a widower and lived with his two sons. They married in January 1921. After her step-son, Helmuth, died at age twelve, she became depressed. In November 1921 she bore Günther one son, Harald. Their marriage ended in divorce. She became secretary to Joseph Goebbels, the minister of propaganda in Nazi- Germany and a close friend of Adolf Hitler. They married on December 12, 1931 with Hitler being best man. Being that Hitler was not married, she was known to be "the first lady of the Third Reich." She and Goebbels had six children. Since she was a great admirer of Hitler, she decided to name all her children with a name beginning with the letter "H": Helga, Hilda, Helmut, Holde, Hedda and Heide. At the Olympics of 1936, Goebbels met the well-known Czech actress Lida Baarova. Having fallen in love, the couple often secretly met. Magda discovered the affair and she wanted a divorce, but Hitler was against a divorce giving Lida Baarova orders to leave Germany. Upon learning that Germany had lost World War II and Hitler's suicide, on May 1, 1945 her six children were injected with Morphine by a dentist and while they were sleeping, a cyanide ampule was crushed in their mouths. A few hours later, the Goebbels couple committed suicide in the garden of the Reich Chancellery. Her son from the previous marriage survived her. In the note to him she wrote, "We only have one goal left: Loyalty to the Fuehrer even in death." There have been over a dozen movies made about her life.
