US Congressman. Born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, he attended Philadelphia College, studied law, was admitted to the bar, then moved to Blountville and established the first law school in Tennessee, at his home in 1800. He then relocated to Rogersville, Tennessee, practiced law, was a member of the superior court of law of equity, (1807-09) and was judge of the first circuit court of Tennessee, (1812-13). In 1815, he was elected as a Republican to the Fourteenth Congress, serving until 1817. Not a candidate for renomination, he resumed the practice of law and was again judge of the first circuit court of Tennessee, (1819-41). He died at age 65 in Rogersville, Tennessee.
