US Congressman; House, 1st District (Opposition) State Court Judge: Born in Roane County, Tennessee, served in the 36th Congress. Eventually he re-settled in Knoxville, TN where lived until his death. He is best know as one President Andrew Johnson's defense counsel in his 1868 impeachment trial. Elected to represent Tennessee's 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1859 to 1861. He is buried next to his second wife but his grave is unmarked. Original cemetery records confirm his burial at Old Gray and that he has not been disinterred.
