US Congressman. Born in Taylor, Tennessee, he graduated from Union University in 1910, from the law department of Cumberland University 1912, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Jackson, Tennessee. He was municipal judge of the City of Jackson in 1915 and City Attorney of Jackson, (1920-23). In 1935, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fourth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1943. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 62.
