US Congressman. He entered the Union Army during the Civil War, being commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the 4th Battery, Indiana Volunteer Light Artillery on September 15, 1861. He served with the battery until he resigned on March 8, 1862. On April 14, 1862 he was commissioned as a Captain of Volunteers in the Union Army's Quartermaster Department, serving there until his resignation on January 12, 1864. After the was he established a law practice in Lexington, Missouri, where he was also editor and owner of the newspaper "The Lexington Register". He moved to Valparaiso, Indiana in 1887 and was elected as a Republican to represent Indiana's 10th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1881 to 1883.
