Continental Congressman. His early schooling was in Charleston, South Carolina. He graduated from the Middle Temple, London, England. Then he returned to South Carolina, was admitted to the bar in 1785, and commenced to practice law in Charleston. In 1786, he was elected to the Second Continental Congress and served until 1788. After his term, he returned to his plantation in Charleston, South Carolina, and engaged in the cultivation of rice until his death at age 72.

On Christmas Eve, 1786, he married Susannah Middleton, and they had several children.
