U.S. Congressman. Born in Larchwood, Iowa, he attended Morningside College, (1920-22), graduated from the law school of the University of South Dakota, in 1927, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice of law in Kennebec, South Dakota, in 1929. He served as South Dakota State’s attorney, Mayor of McLaughlin and judge of Probate Court, Corson County, (1931-39). In addition, he was the newspaper publisher for the McLaughlin Messenger, McIntosh News, Morristown World and editor of the South Dakota State Bar Association Journal, (1938-50). He was also a member of the South Dakota State Senate, (1939, 41), a member of the Missouri River States Committee, (1940-43) and a member of the State Board of Regents of Education, (1946-50). In 1951, he was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-second Congress and to the next nine succeeding Congresses, serving until 1971. After leaving Congress, he lived in retirement until his death at age 96 in Rapid City, South Dakota.
