US Congressman. Born in Harmony, Maine, at age fifteen he enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War, being mustered in as a private in Company A, 16th Maine Volunteer Infantry on August 14, 1862. He served through the end of the war, being promoted to corporal before being honorably mustered out on June 5, 1865. He then moved to Iowa, where he studied law, entered the Iowa State Bar Association, and established a law practice in Denison, Iowa. He moved to Nebraska in 1886, and published a newspaper for two years before moving to South Dakota in 1888. He eventually located to Deadwood, South Dakota where he published the "Evening Independent" newspaper. He was elected as a Populist candidate to represent South Dakota as its at-large delegate to the United States House of Representatives, where he served a single term from 1879 to 1899. He continued with newspaper publishing in Deadwood until he passed away in 1910.
