US Congressman. Born in Colchester, Connecticut, he served during the Revolutionary War, rising through the ranks as a Captain in 1784, to a Lieutenant Colonel (1795-98) and as Brigadier General of the 7th Brigade, (1800-03). After the war, he was a merchant, ship owner, exporter, importer and a member of the State Connecticut Assembly, (1791-1806). In 1807, he was elected as a Federalist to the Tenth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1817. After his last term, he resumed his former business activities and soon retired to private life until his death at age 78 in East Haddam, Connecticut.

Died on the 22d day of December 1834. Aged 79 years. He was a devoted patriot of the Revolution, and for ten years was a highly respected member of the Congress of the U.S. Talents, benevolence, and integrity characterized his spotless life.
