US Congressman. He was representing the State of Louisiana as a Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1941 to 1943 and 1946 to 1972, an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Louisiana in 1952, and a member of the Warren Commission, which investigated President John Kennedy's assassination. On October 16, 1972, Boggs, then House Majority Leader, was flying from Anchorage to Juneau with fellow Alaska House of Representative Nick Begich, Begich's aide Russ Brown, and pilot Don Jonz when their plane disappeared without a trace. A massive manhunt ensued, but neither the plane nor the bodies of its occupants were ever found. Boggs' wife, Lindy Boggs, eventually took over his seat and served in the House for 18 years. He was also the father of political commentator Cokie Roberts. A cenotaph was placed for him at Congressional Cemetery in 1981. Boggs was educated at Tulane University where he received a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1934 and a law degree in 1937, practicing law before entering politics.
