US Congressman. Born in Short, Mississippi, he attended Oakland College, Iuka Normal College and taught in the public schools in Tishomingo, Alcorn and Chickasaw Counties, Mississippi. He graduated from the George Robertson Christian College in 1905, from the law department of the University of Mississippi in 1909, was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law at Houston, Mississippi. He was the prosecuting attorney of Chickasaw County, (1912-20). In 1923, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-eighth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1935. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law in Houston, Mississippi, until his death at age 80.
