Educator, Civil Engineer, Born in Villefranche, France, he was educated at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. In the Napoleonic Wars, he served as a Captain in the artillery, and was a prisoner in Russia for two years following the Moscow campaign. He traveled to the United States in 1816, and, with recommendation from the Marquis de Lafayette, became assistant professor of engineering at the United States Military Academy, a postion he held from 1817 to 1823. He then served as a state engineer for Virginia from 1823 to 1832, and President of the Virginia Military Institute from 1839 to 1845. He directed the building of the first railroad over the Blue Ridge (1849 to 1858) and was the principal of the Richmond Academy from 1859 to his death in 1864. Originally buried in Shockoe Hill Cemetery in Richmond, he was reinterred on the grounds of the Virginia Military Institute.
