Mr. James Oscar Mattox, 85, died Monday, May 2, 2011, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville. He was born Jan. 14, 1926, in Jessup, GA, to the late Joseph Oscar and Ida McGauley Mattox. Mr. Mattox was a member of New Union United Methodist Church and of Masonic Lodge #299 in Harmony. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served during World War II. Mr. Mattox retired in 1988, from Valspar Corp. after over 30 years of service. He enjoyed big band music, western movies, traveling and good food. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Richardson Mattox in 1999; one sister, Marion Simmons; and two brothers, Parker and Alton Mattox. Survivors include one sister, Lois Fleming of Jacksonville, Fla; three sisters-in-law, Helen Bulla, Wanda Sutphin (Al) and Anne Richardson; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 5, at New Union United Methodist Church with Dr. Steven Rainey officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be considered for New Union United Methodist Church New Building Fund, c/o Terry Dyson, 595 Duke Whittaker Rd., Mocksville, NC 27028; or New Union United Methodist Church General Fund, c/o Doris Dyson, 1469 County Line Rd., Harmony, NC 28634.
