He successfully campaigned to end the rum ration in the United States Navy, 1862; commander of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, 1858-1861; in charge of Union naval forces on the upper Mississippi, he succeeded in capturing Island Number 10, opening up the lower Mississippi; wounded at Fort Donelson, 1862; promoted to Rear Admiral, 1862; named commander of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron in 1863, he died before he could assume command.
