US Congressman. He was born in New York, New York, to Ralph Thurman and Sarah Thurman and he had one older sister named Sarah Elizabeth who was born in 1806. He was educated in local common public schools and eventually graduated from Columbia College (later Columbia University) in New York City in 1835. After finishing college he moved to Warren County, near Chestertown, New York, and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He also served in several local political and business offices including serving as a Director of the Sacket's Harbor and Saratoga Railroad and as an Associate Judge of the Warren County, New York, Court. On June 2, 1841, he married Sarah Tibbits Lane. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and he was elected. A Whig, he then served New York's 15th District (Thirty-First Congress) in the United States House of Representatives from 1849 to 1851. He declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1850. After his term in the United States Congress expired on March 3, 1851, he was succeeded in office by United States Representative Joseph Russell. After his time in public service, he spent most of his time on his farm and managing his estate. He passed away at Friends Lake, New York, from cholera at the age of 39. He was originally buried in the family cemetery, but his body was later moved to its current location the Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, New York. Following his death, his widow and children sold some of their land holdings to the Delaware and Hudson Railroad during its construction.
