Virginia Governor. He attended Hampden-Sydney College, (1785-89), received a law degree from the College of William and Mary, in 1893, was admitted to the bar in 1894 and practiced law in Richmond, Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, (1796-1805). In 1805, he was elected as a Democrat-Republican, the 14th Governor of Virginia, serving until 1808. After leaving office, he served as Judge of the General Court, (1808-11) and was a trustee of Hampden-Sydney College, (1809-30). In 1830, he was appointed a judge for the Court of Appeals and served until his resignation due to ill health in 1851.
