Son of Rev. Henry Charles and Margaret Bell Haskell. Henry married (1) Isabel Cummings in 1901, their only child was son, Henry Cummings Haskell. He married (2) Katherine Wright, sister of Wilbur and Orville Wright on November 20, 1926. They had been friends since their college days at Oberlin College. His (3) marriage was to Agnes Lee Hadley, widow of former Missouri governor Herbert Spencer Hadley.

Harry had been a member of The Kansas City Star staff for 54 years at the time of his death and had been editor since 1928. He was the author of two books and won Pulitzer prizes for The Star's editorial excellence in 1933 and 1944.
