A truck driver, Pop married Cora "Koko" Walton and they moved to Chicago to look for work and Pop took a job at a slaughterhouse.

Some credit is due Pop for breaking Koko into the blues business. They would go together to the clubs on Chicago's south side, and Pop would encourage Koko to sit in with the band playing to sing. She was quickly noticed and appreciated by Willie Dixon, who produced her first solo record.

In a van accident, Koko broke her shoulder, collarbone, and several ribs while on tour, and her husband, Pop, went into cardiac arrest; although Pop survived the crash, his health was never the same, and he passed away a few months later.
