Poet. He was a Spanish-born poet of the 20th century, who is considered a member of the "Generation of '27." He started writing poetry as a child before starting law studies at University of Seville and earning a law degree in 1925. He began to publish his poems in various magazines. In 1923 he did military service in the Regiment of Cavalry. Even after earning his law degree, he knew poetry was his career focus. During the Spanish Civil War, in early 1938, he fled penniless to England, then to the United states in 1947 and ultimately in 1950 to Mexico, escaping the fascism in Spain. He remained in exile the rest of his life. Besides his poetry, he published essays on French, English, German, as well as Spanish literature. From 1954 to 1960 he was a lecturer at The National Autonomous University of Mexico. Returning to the United States at intervals, he lectured at San Fransico State College, the University of Southern California, and UCLA. While in England, he taught at various university but had problems with the English language at first. In 1947 he taught at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts but did not like the cold New England winters. Besides poetry, he published short stories and dramas. Among his collection of poems are "Los Placeres Prohibidos", "Donde Habite el Olvido", "La Realidad y el Deseo", and "Como Quién Espera el Alba." Much of his work subjects on what a person wants and what a person can actually obtain. He addressed his homosexuality in his poetry. A sculptural monument to Cernuda stands in Sevilla and several Spanish postage stamps have been released in honor with his image. All of his poems appeared in the final edition of "Realidad y deseo", published posthumously in 1964. An English-language anthology of his work, "The Poetry of Luis Cernuda", was published in 1971.
