Marie Dionne (1934-1970) - Find a Grave Memorial

One of the five Dionne Quintuplets who were born on May 28, 1934, in the farming community of Callendar, Ontario. They were born to poor farmers, Oliva and Elzire Dionne. Their births were attended by midwives and Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe. After the births there was a great concern they would not survive, but as time went by their condition improved. They were entrusted to care of a nurse named, Louise de Kirline and was supervised by Dr. Dafoe. After a short time the Quints were taken from their parents and guardianship was given to the Ontario Government. They became a tourist attraction and were visited by millions pf people. Later in life they were given back to there parents' custody. They were used as models for brand name products and were the subject of many films and documentaries. They include, "The Country Doctor" (1936), "Reunion" (1936), "Going On Two" (1936), "Quintupland" (1938), "Five Of A Kind" (1938), "Unusual Occupations" (1942), "Year Of Siege" (1962) and "The Dionne Quintuplets" (1978). They wrote several books and in 1998 they sued the Ontario Government and won $4 million in damages. Marie Dionne died on February 27, 1970, from a brain tumor. She was 35 years old.
