U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the law department of the University of Virginia in 1870, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Boydton, Virginia, in 1871. He served as the Commonwealth attorney for Mecklenburg County (1877-95). In 1896, he successfully contested as a Republican the election of William R. McKenney to the Fifty-fourth Congress, serving until 1897 and successfully contested the election of Sydney P. Epes to the Fifty-fifth Congress, serving (1898-99). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
