Boxer Rebellion Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Knightstown, Indiana, he served as a Private in the United States Marine Corps. During the Battle of Peking, China, July 21, to August 17, 1900, Private Zion displayed meritorious conduct on many occasions in actions against Boxer and Imperial Chinese troops. For distinguished service, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on July 19, 1901 and was Honorably discharged from Marine Corps on July 29, 1904. In August 1905, he enlisted in the US Army and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in July 1917. During World War I, he was a 1st Lieutenant in charge of a German POW barracks at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, when he died at age 46 from an apparent accidental gunshot wound inflicted while cleaning his weapon.
