Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. He received the award on July 18, 1877 from US Army General William T. Sherman in a ceremony at a military camp by the confluence of the Yellowstone and Tongue Rivers, Montana Territory, for his actions as a private with Company D, 5th Infantry, US Army, from October 21, 1876 until January 8, 1877. A German immigrant, he joined the US Army and was assigned to frontier duty in the Montana Territory and took part in US Army General Nelson A. Miles "winter campaign" against the Sioux Indians. He distinguished himself in several engagements with the Sioux during this period, most notably, at the Battle of Cedar Creek, October 21, 1876. He later left the US Army and returned to New York City, New York where he died at the age of 56. His Medal of Honor citation simply reads: "Gallantry in action."
