Copper Heiress, Folk Figure. She was the youngest child of copper magnate and United States Senator William Andrews Clark and one of the wealthiest women on Earth. She was educated in New York City and by age 25 was an accomplished painter with her work in galleries. Married in 1928 to William Gower, Huguette and William divorced two years later and had no children. From around 1930 on she essentially disappeared from view, spending her life in a New York apartment surrounded by trusted staff with whom she spoke French for fear of being overheard. Her homes in California and Connecticut were kept maintained in preparation for visits that never came. She spent at least the last 20 years in a New York hospital, (though her health both mentally and physically were up to par when she was voluntarily admitted), always under an assumed name, her room always kept a secret. At the time of her death a public scandal was being investigated involving her attorney and her accountant who had been accused of leading her into unwise decisions with her wealth. She was buried in the Clark family mausoleum.
