Italian Monarch. Royal House of Savoy. King Umberto I was King of Italy from Jan 9, 1878 to July 29, 1900. He became King upon the death of his father King Victor Emmanuel II. As a young man, the then Prince fought in the war with Austria to obtain the Austrian territories in Italy. After becoming King, Umberto I observed the constitution and parliamentary government. His Majesty actively enhanced his people's welfare. The King would financially and administratively assist the victims of earthquakes, floods & a cholera epidemic. The King was active in foreign policy. His Majesty agreed to the Triple Alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary. The King attempted and failed to establish a colonial empire in north east Africa. King Umberto I was shot by Gaetano Bresci, an anarchist at Monza near Milan in 1900. The King's son became King Victor Emmanuel III.
