World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. The only person of Eastern European origin to win the British Commonwealths' highest award for bravery, the Victoria Cross. Having accounted for at least 16 enemy soldiers with bayonet and rifle in the process of his achievement. Whilst engaged in battle near Lens, France in August 1917, he was leading a section of soldiers in clearing the enemy from emplacements in houses and buildings. Whilst conducting these clearing operations his squad was being held up by an enemy machine gun. Subsequently he made a rush for this emplaced weapon and with great skill and bravery overcame the crew and retrieved the weapon intact. Performing an almost identitical feat the following day and continuing to clear emplacements until succumbing to serious injury some days later.
