World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Private in the 7th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. On September 2, 1918, at the Battle of Arras, France, his battalion was held down under heavy fire from German positions. Ahead of his company he rushed a trench occupied by a large party of enemy, personally bayoneting two and taking 10 prisoners. Later he engaged an enemy sniper who was causing many casualties, took the position and so demoralized the enemy that 30 others surrendered to him. For most conspicuous bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross in December, 1918 and later achieved the rank of Captain. Later in life, he was Sergeant-at-Arms of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and governor of Toronto Jail (the Don Jail).
